Perhaps one of the most iconic temple complexes in northern India, Jageshwar has 101 temples dedicated to Shiva, made entirely using local stone and as the legend says, apparently constructed overnight.

On the way to Jageshwar are the last vestiges of a cave with ancient rock paintings and including handprints from that time.

An hour’s drive on winding roads through forests of pine and chir one arrives at a rather unique “bell” temple dedicated to the local god “Golu” who insists on signing affidavits with its devotees to keep up both sides of the bargain! In this curious village of Chitai also resides an Indo-German couple running a high-quality organic farm where one can buy cosmetics, spices and grains of the Himalayas.
